Frequently asked questions
What is an IP address and why is it needed?
An IP address is the number your provider assigns to your connection. Websites use it to know where to send the answer. The internet cannot work without it - it is like a return address on an envelope.
How do I find out my IP address?
Just open this page - the address is shown at the top. We take it from the connection itself, so there is nothing to enter and nowhere to sign in.
Why is the city wrong?
The city comes from a database that maps addresses to provider networks. A provider may hand out addresses from a pool registered in another region, so the city sometimes differs. The country, however, is almost always correct.
Can every website see my IP address?
Yes, any site you open sees your address - otherwise it could not reply to you. It can be hidden only with a VPN or a proxy: then sites see the server address instead of yours.
What is a WebRTC leak?
WebRTC is a browser technology for calls and video. It can reveal your real address to a site even when a VPN is on. The check on this page shows whether this happens to you.
Why check IPv6 and the time zone?
Even when a VPN changes your ordinary address, the browser can still give you away: through a newer IPv6 address bypassing the tunnel, or through a system time zone that does not match the country you appear to connect from.
Do you store my address?
No. The address is only used to show it to you and is never stored. See the privacy policy for details.
Can I get this data from a program?
Yes. A request to api.ipgeo.ru returns the address and country in machine-readable form, with no keys, sign-up or limits.
